Excellent blog mate! Thank you so much!

My partner and I wanted to start hosting weekly game nights at ours for our friends to come over but we never thought we'd find such entertaining games. On a recent holiday we played Carcassonne and really enjoyed it and by searching "Carcassonne best game ever" your blog came straight up lol We are going to invest in some of these other games you've suggested and see if we can get a weekly game night going :)

Keep up the good work!

Very cool list. I've played a lot of these and will be looking into the ones I haven't played yet. I know your list can only hold so many games and there are probably a lot you had to leave off but I'm wondering if you have ever played Zombies!!! because I know that is one I could never leave off my list of favorite geek games.

Hi, was looking at buying this game, http://kingbrickgame.com/ , reminds me of finger paper football. This shipping is high on the pizza box version because of the weight, board is wood, ships from UK. The playground version, with the purchase of few extra bricks to bring it up to pizza version, is a lot cheaper, but, still a little pricey on shipping. Anyone want to split the cost of shipping? Nice game while you wait for the pizza to arrival, or just sitting around:) I am near Hilton Village. Thanks.

Settlers of Catan is the ultimate board game. Amazing that a game can appeal to geeks and medieval-obssessed gamers, and also the contemporary young and hip. You should try Sort it Out! a game from University Games. The game asks you to arrange facts, events, and measurements in the right sequence and you get points for the number you've guessed correctly. The trick is that one wrong guess and your whole list gets thrown off. It's addictive and draws from history, science, pop culture, and random knowledge. Check it out: Areyougame.com

I agree with all of cam's picks and would only add a handful more.

Dominion is a new board game (late 2008) from Rio Grande that is getting rave reviews on notable "gamer" sites like Board Game Geek. And for good reason! Balanced gameplay, easy to learn, fast to play, and variable in that each game starts with only any 10 of the 25 resource cards. Each player is trying to build a kingdom made up of land types with victory points but starting with the same cards. So the strategy revolves around how one builds ones own kingdom through buying of land, resources or money the fastest.

Memoir '44 from Days of Wonder. While not a traditional wargame in the classic "hexes and chits" sense, the game's superbly clear rules and ability to replicate the combat experience of lack of supplies, fog of war, inability to react as planned, and surprises in combat through a card-based system make this game both approachable and fun. The little plastic men, tanks, artillery pieces etc also add to the atmosphere. Supported by a wide range of expansion packs that cover the Eastern Front, Med Theatre, and others.

Gloom from Atlas Games is a macabre, atmospheric, tongue-in-cheek card game where the goal is to make your odd family as miserable as possible by adding Gorey-esque misfortunes onto each of your five characters, while trying to play happy events onto your opponents. When your character is suitably saddled with these "pathos" points, you get to kill them off. Low score after all five family members have met their maker, wins :-) Great art inspired by Edward Gorey and the card's unique see-through system of adding pathos points makes the game a quick-playing gem. The Unhappy Homes expansion pack is well worth the investment as you add a new family (for up to 5 players) as well as mysteries and the family home.

As for board games, the board-less board game hive should be on there, too:
